Group Mandala Making

(paper, or fabric)

Great for birthday parties as a group present, or documentation of rights of passage…

The participants can either get a number of sheets of paper and art supplies, and all take part in making a large number of mandalas. This will make parting party gifts for everyone to take home! A momento of the gathering.

Alternatively, someone can bring in a canvas, an old sheet, or a blank hoodie or t-shirt. Using art supplies, everyone takes a turn adding one layer of design on the mandala. Maybe the party host, or the person the party is for can start the first layer. Or alternatively, the guest of honour could make the last layer, or whichever layer they prefer.

For more random, divine exitement, colours could be chosen randomly out of a “blind” bag next to the mandalas, so that people cannot focus too much on controlling their participation.

For an even more surprising unfolding, bring some pieces of paper or fabric to cover the center of a very large wall madala the size of a sheet, for example. As people work on the mandala, only allow people to see the very last amount of work that was done, by pinning paper or fabric to the center of the mandala. This works better if you have a special room, or hidden, seperate area for people to use in creating the mandala, as it makes more a surprise for the reveal!
